senior photo sessions: more for guys or girls?

Girls usually get the spotlight when it comes to portrait photography, and this is especially the case for senior photo sessions. For me it's hard to find inspiration online of guy's senior photo sessions because they often aren't the ones booking these sessions - it's always girls. But interestingly enough I've done more guy's photo sessions this year than years past. My photography events sometimes doesn't lend me to practice enough with guys. When photographing families, the husband's and boy's usually want the least amount of camera time. And when photographing groomsmen at weddings, they too often get the short end of the stick since the focus is primarily on the bride. Am I right?!

This year has been really rewarding to get to learn to work with posing senior guys in ways uniquely that capture their strength and personality. This most recent downtown Fredericksburg senior photo session was so enjoyable! Mason was a natural when it came to posing, and he was very comfortable in front of the camera. I think his years of experience being in front of the camera lend to this, but more importantly I think the fact that we didn't rush into photographing at the start of our session significantly helped him relax and be prepared for our two hour session. Often times the excitement of meeting my client causes me to rush right into capturing them, but I've found that taking time to connect with clients at the start of our session - whether that be hang at our meeting spot, watch the kids play and get their wiggles out, or walk around the location we're about to photograph at - helps to relax us and ease us into a really enjoyable session.

What I love about taking photos of graduating seniors is the options they have for their session. I allow seniors to bring as many outfit changes and props that they want. This allows them to have these timeless photos that highlight their unique talents, interests, and hobbies - to use at graduation and reflect back on in years to come. Here's a sample of my two-hour session with Mason in downtown Fredericksburg.
